Tenere-Djado Expedition - Niger

The Niger desert better known as Tenere "the desert of deserts" is today open to tourists. For desert lovers, the Tenere is one of the dream destinations.

Shared between the Toubous (Kawar) and the Touareg (Aïr) who respectfully call it "the land outside" or "the desert within the desert", the Tenere is a sandy area nearly 1,000 kilometers long, the emptiest desert area in the world. Until about 65 million years ago, dinosaurs lived here, and the huge sand basin was covered with water and dense forests.

The journey alone is spectacular: from the ancient caravan city of Agadez to the masterful rock carvings of Dabous, through the oasis of Timia and across the moon-like Aïr mountain range, to the rocky amphitheater of Arakao on the eastern edge, filled with imposing dunes. We also meet the legendary salt caravans and visit the mysterious ruined cities of Djado and Djaba on the high mountains of Orida.

Tour takes place in November, December and January.
